The most common regret after an interior job is not the workmanship — it is the colour. A shade that looked perfect on a small chip under shop lighting turns out too cold, too dark or too busy once it covers a whole wall. A little process up front is the cheapest insurance there is.
Test big, and test in place. Paint a large swatch, at least a couple of feet square, directly on the wall rather than on a card held against it. Colour reads differently next to your floors, your trim and your furniture than it does anywhere else, and a small sample surrounded by the old colour tells you almost nothing.
Then watch it through a full day. Light changes a colour completely: north-facing rooms read cooler and greyer, west-facing rooms warm up hard through a Pittsburgh afternoon, and warm bulbs push everything yellow after dark. A shade you love at 10am can be a shade you dislike at 8pm. Live with the swatch for a day or two before you commit.
When you are unsure, anchor the big surfaces with quiet, flexible neutrals and save the bold choice for a smaller moment — an accent wall, a door, one room you would be happy to repaint sooner. Neutrals also carry from room to room, which is what makes a whole floor of a house feel considered rather than assembled.
